Our Work

What we do for each subject

MATHS    We use an internet maths course called Meleto.  Jessica is just finishing the Year 4 course.

ENGLISH  Jessica reads a wide variety of books (though mostly ones with fairys in them).  We do reading comprehension questions and study pages on books we look at together.  We are currently reading through the Chronicles of Narnia together.  After we have finished that we are going to do either Peter Pan or Alice in Wonderland.  Jessica has only recently started to enjoy writing and she will write short stories and poetry when the mood takes her.  We also use CGP study books.

SPELLING  We use an old fashioned spelling book called The Essential Spelling List.  Jessica is currently on age 10 spelling.

SCIENCE  We use the CGP Science study books and workbooks as well as using small experiment sets and we are making crystals at the moment.  We enjoy frequest visits to the Natural History Musuem and The Science Museum.  Jessica likes reading her numerous books about science, especially those about the human body.

GEOGRAPHY  CGP study books and workbooks plus project work.  We have done projects on Australia and The Netherlands.  Google Earth is a good resource to use.  We are planning a trip to Paris soon to look at various buildings that Jessica is interested in.

HISTORY  CGP Study books and workbooks.  Project work. We did a big project on Ancient Egypt last year and also one on the Tudors.  We use a CDRom called Junior Topics which has fun games about key stage 2 history subjects.  We are currently learning about the Victorians.

I.C.T.  CGP study books and workbooks.  We use the computer for research, study, printouts, downloading worksheets, communication, games, etc.  Jessica loves the Girls Go Games web site and also BBC Bitesize and Primary Games.  We use design programmes for making cards and artwork.  Jacob is as proficient on the computer as Jessica is though he does like to wipe out my desktop from time to time.

ART & DESIGN  Art work we do includes painting, colouring, hamma beads, collage, fabric dying and printing, play dough, moon sand constructions, mega blocks, wooden bricks, K'nex, jewellery making, card designing.  We do lots of art work for projects we are working on.  Jessica has made a mask of Tutankhamun from papier mache and also a collage of the Great Barrier Reef.

MUSIC  Jessica and Jacob are both learing to play the recorder and piano. We enjoy listening to all types of music.  Jessica has singing lessons and has attended a workshop with Les Miserable in London.  We are learning about different dance styles aswell.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE  CGP Keystage 3 French study book and workbooks.  Both children are beginning to learn French, just for the fun of it.  Jacob picks up a lot of Spanish just by watching his favourite tv programmes.  We are also learned some Dutch before visiting the Netherlands in April.

P.E.  Jessica & Jacob go ice skating twice a week and have lessons. Jessica is in the Ice Skating club.  Both have swimming lessons and do Cheerleading classes.  Jessica will hopefully be competing in the National Cheerleading Championships in July. Jessica loves roller skating and is usually attached to a set of wheels in some form or other.

SOCIAL SKILLS  Jessica goes to Brownies, Cheerleading and ice skating club where she meets up with other children. We all go to the local Home Educators meetings most weeks, as well as attending Families in Focus meetings a couple of times a month.  I take Jessica out and about with me and TRY to teach her social skills in various settings, such as shops, public transport etc.

R.E.  Both children attend Sunday School.  I teach them about other religions, festivals etc as and when necessary, such as Diwali and Chinese New Year.

We have an extensive home library of books and cdroms on every subject and make good use of the local libraries.  We get our books from Freecycle, Ebay, book shops, library sales, friends and family.  Resource materials need not be expensive.  CGP books are reasonably priced and most book shops sell curriculum based workbooks for key stages 1 & 2.    Imagination is the best learning tool.
